Most importantly, remember that New York City is a major tourist destination, especially at Christmas, so be prepared for large crowds, which truly are part of the experience. Embrace the energy, take in as many sights as possible, and allow yourself to soak up the magic even in the busiest moments. We averaged about 17,000 steps per day and still relied on the subway and other transportation multiple times to get around efficiently. This was our third trip to the city, and each visit feels just as awe-inspiring as the last. Coming from the open desert landscapes of Arizona, it’s incredible to see the sheer scale and density of the city with towering buildings and nonstop movement instead of wide-open spaces like we are accustomed to. The contrast makes New York City feel even more unforgettable.
Packing Tips
Wear comfortable shoes – You’ll walk far more than you expect, often 15,000+ steps a day, so supportive footwear is essential.
Pack your patience – Crowds, lines, and busy sidewalks are part of NYC, especially during the holidays, so go with the flow.
Bring a big appetite – From street food to iconic restaurants, there’s always something worth trying around every corner. There are hotdog stands on every corner, lol.
Use the subway – It’s the fastest and most efficient way to get almost anywhere in the city.
Plan loosely, not rigidly – Have must-sees in mind but allow flexibility for weather, wait times, and spontaneous discoveries.
Dress in layers – Winter temperatures can change quickly, and you’ll warm up fast while walking or riding the subway.
